“Make More Money by Making Your Employees Happy” - New Book Proves It Pays to Keep Your Workforce Happy

That’s just the theory posited by Dr. Noelle Nelson in her book “Make More Money by Making Your Employees Happy.”1

She mentions a study conducted by the Jackson Organization showing that “companies that effectively appreciate employee value enjoy a return on equity and assets more than triple that experienced by firms that don’t.” Of Fortune’s ‘100 Best Companies to Work For’, the study found their stock prices rose on average 14% per year between 1998 to 2005, far outpacing the 6% rise experienced by the overall market. 2

Nelson claims that employees don’t just need more money to be happy. She recommends that business owners instead focus on “keep[ing] their promises and show[ing] compassion for their employees.”3 Those promises can range from, yes, pay raises, but also resources to help them do their jobs better.

She uses as an example the leading aluminum manufacturer Alcoa, whose new CEO in 1987 made it a priority to increase employee safety because he knew this was a major concern to his workers. Over the ensuing 13 years, productivity jumped, accident rates decreased to about one per week, and the company’s annual income had grown 500%.3
